Mal,the Australian states' postal notes & postal orders that were issued after 1910 were cashable outside the state that they were issued in.I have got a Papua & New Guinea Aussie-type postal order that was issued at Port Moresby. This would have been fully cashable within Australia, but luckily,no-one cashed that one.

The early 'Uniform Issues' were of the same basic design, but differing in the name of the Aussie State at the top.

The Indian Princely States' postal orders,on the other hand, were only able to be cashed outside the state that they were issued in.They weren't cashable within the state.

Dividing the listing by country is unavoidable,as they are a part of the numismatic history of that country.

Aidan.

As far as I am concerned the two terms are not synonyms, and we should be careful to distinguish betwen them. But collectors do need to be alert that dealers very often treat "postal order", "money order" and "postal note" as equivalent, especially US dealers. For example if you just search for "postal order" on ebay you'll miss out US-based items where the seller has described them as money orders or postal notes.
