On page 31 of Michael Brill's catalogue he states:
Quote:
"currency postal orders exist from 3rd September 1939 - 20th December 1939. These can usually be recognised by guillotined edge and no counterfoil. All so far seen with IN INK ..."

Whilst preparing the index of the Journal's illustrations, I came across an article in PON 32 (p.6) by Richard Flashman which illustrates "A guillotined Order issued in early 1940", namely a 1/- order stamped "15 JA 40", Broad Street, Oxford. This is outside the date limits given by Brill, but the interesting point is that it does not contain the words "IN INK" in the instructions at the top.
Is it a faked guillotining? Or is it a rare variant?

Flashman's PO is probably one that had been cut ready for issue as currency. Being guillotined would not alter the value, in my opinion. Whether the without IN INK for currency issues is scarce, it is difficult to tell as only a relatively small sample exists. They might command a premium. I know Flashman sold his collection and I suspect it went abroad. Will the present owner ever look here?.....Mal

John & Mal,I reckon that this note could be a remainder currency issue form that was left over & issued as if it was a normal issue postal order.

Aidan.

It wouldn't have been suitable for issuing as a "normal" order, as (presumably) the post office would have thrown away the counterfoil.
However, my main point was that it was without the words "IN INK" which Michael Brill said was normally present for currency issues.

The post office could have issued the PO with the counterfoil detached if it had kept it. Another possibility is that they were awaiting new stock and this was the last resort.
I have just had a look at my collection and the PO, in the article, without IN INK is there. I must have used it to illustrate the article. At that time few, if any, had realised about IN INK.
I also have a guillotined 6d PO issued 3MY40. So this practice appears to be common. Further two actual currency issues are with IN INK. One is obviously guillotined and the other is not.
The date stamps are in mauve ink (similar to the colour of this post) and different post offices. It might mean that the ink colour was deliberate and intended to make them more readily seen to be currency. Was the mauve ink mandatory for currency orders? Interesting.........Mal

Mal,
There's some more King George VI currency postal orders that have been posted up on here in another section.

Aidan.
