Queen Victoria 1st issue Postal Order, essay for 15s watermark

Queen Victoria second issue, head die proof

Queen Victoria second issue, 2s proof

This item has no black printing, but the watermark shows that it is a 2s Postal Order.

Queen Victoria second issue 20s, first watermark, 1884

All values which were in the first issue were also produced in the second issue (but are very scarce), using the same watermarked paper as the first issue. The new values added to the second issue (ie values not used in the first issue, eg 4s) had the new second type watermark.

This "Specimen" is on the same type and watermark as the item above.

Queen Victoria second issue 4s, second watermark, 1884

This particular example was issued on the same day at the same office as the 20s Postal Order illustrated above.

This "Specimen" is on the same type and watermark as the item above.

Victorian novelty Christmas card, circa 1890, in the shape of a postbox

As posted the item is folded into the shape of post box, which on pulling the ribbon at the right opens out to a collection of letters, post cards, and in the centre a 20s postal order. Unfortunately the watermark of the postal order isn't discernible...

All values of the second issue can be found with this "third" watermark.

ex Howard Lunn / Tony Brown

Queen Victoria third issue

Postal orders from the third issue can be found with two types of ornamentation at the ends of the value tablet:

Queen Victoria third issue proof sheet

For this "third" issue, the instruction "NOT NEGOTIABLE" was introduced at the top of the Postal Order. The third issue uses only the watermark used for the final version of the "second" issue (as shown in the 10s item above). This scan shows the top left hand corner pair in a sheet of 8 (the other 6 are not visible on this scan), all with the same serial number "000000" with prefix C/22.

This item shows the "first type" value tablet.

Queen Victoria third issue 10s 1896

This Postal Order has the "second type" value tablet.

Queen Victoria third issue 1s, 1901

This Postal Order was bought on 23 January 1901, the day after Queen Victoria's death (22 January 1901, 6.30pm, Osborne House, Isle of Wight).

Queen Victoria third issue, 7/6d, 1902

Used after Queen Victoria's death, the 7/6d is one of the scarcer high-value orders to be used.
